Small Brains, Big Ideas: Biomedical Insights from Invertebrates Practical course November 10-19 2016 Santiago, Las Cruces & Valparaíso (Chile)

The fourth version of this successful practical course will take place November 10th to 19th, 2016. The course will consist of lectures and hands-on laboratory exercises that will expose Latin-American students and junior Faculty to the use of invertebrates model systems in modern neuroscience and biomedical research. As in previous years, the course will primarily focus on Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans; however it also includes work on honeybees, which is a powerful invertebrate model for research on learning and memory. The course will cover a variety of subjects, including genetic approaches to the study of brain and synapse development, cellular and molecular neuroscience, analysis of brain circuits, and behavior. Instructors include faculty members from the host institutions as well as renowned scientists in each field. This will allow students to gain first hand experience with these model systems and to interact and network with leaders in these areas of research. The course includes a one-day international symposium at the picturesque city of Valparaíso.

The course will start in Santiago but will mostly take place at the “Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinan (ECIM)” in the costal town of Las Cruces. For more information on the venue please visit www.ecim.cl.
