PREMIO TESIS DE DOCTORADO ACADEMIA CHILENA DE CIENCIAS 2017

La Academia Chilena de Ciencias llama a Concurso para el Premio Tesis  de Doctorado Academia Chilena de Ciencias 2017. Este tiene por objetivo premiar la mejor Tesis de Doctorado realizada en los últimos tres años por estudiantes nacionales o extranjeros en cualquiera de los Programas de Doctorado en Ciencias Exactas y en Ciencias Naturales del país reconocidos por el Ministerio de Educación y acreditados y reconocidos por CONICYT.

Esta distinción se otorga desde el año 1997 y tiene por objetivo contribuir a la promoción de la ciencia en el país e incentivar a los estudiantes de doctorado. 

El Premio consiste en US$1.500 (su equivalente en moneda nacional) para cada  área. Esta distinción es entregada en una sesión extraordinaria de la Academia Chilena de Ciencias en la que el galardonado con el premio deberá exponer un resumen de su trabajo de tesis.

El premio es otorgado por un jurado integrado por miembros de la Academia Chilena de Ciencias, en cualquiera de sus categorías, nombrados por la Academia en sesión ordinaria de acuerdo a un Reglamento interno.

         Los antecedentes deberán ser presentados en la sede de la Academia de Ciencias, Almirante Montt 454 (Monjitas altura 500, entre Mosqueto y Miraflores, metro Bellas Artes), hasta el día 31 de agosto de 2017, a las 17:00 horas, impostergablemente.

         Podrán postular todas aquellas personas nacionales o extranjeras, que hayan obtenido su grado académico de Doctor en el país en las áreas de Ciencias Naturales y de Ciencias Exactas y en programas de Doctorado acreditados y reconocidos por CONICYT. En este concurso sólo se consideran Tesis de Doctorado con fechas de impresión entre el 1º de Julio de 2014 y el 1^o de Julio de 2017.

The Pew Latin American Fellows Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides support for young scientists from Latin America to receive postdoctoral training in leading laboratories in the United States. The program gives fellows an opportunity to further their scientific knowledge and advance biomedical research in Latin America, while promoting exchange and collaboration among investigators in the United States and Latin America.

Details of the award

• Ten Pew Latin American fellows will be selected in 2018.
• Pew will provide a grant of $60,000 to the sponsoring U.S. institution to supplement the fellow’s postdoctoral salary.
• After completion of the fellowship, and upon confirmation of the fellow’s plans to return to Latin America, an additional payment of $35,000 will be made to the sponsoring institution for the purchase of supplies and equipment to establish the fellow’s independent laboratory in Latin America.
• Fellowship grants will begin in August 2018.

Requirements

• Applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. or M.D. degree by Feb. 1, 2018, but no earlier than July 14, 2013.
• Preference will be given to applicants who received their undergraduate and graduate degrees from institutions in Latin America. Applicants may have obtained their undergraduate or graduate degrees from schools outside Latin America but preferably not in the United States.
• Applicants with more than 18 months of postdoctoral training in the United States before July 14, 2018, are not eligible. • Applicants must submit a written statement of intent to return to Latin America.
• Applicants will not be considered if they have completed graduate work with a proposed sponsor.

• Potential candidates must identify and obtain a commitment from the head of a laboratory in the United States for a postdoctoral position. All applicants are required to contact a member of their regional committee before contacting the Pew fellows program office.
• Once sponsors are identified, applicants must send an email to Kara Coleman, project director, at kcoleman@pewtrusts.org to request access to the online application on or after July 14, 2017.
• The application deadline is Oct. 2, 2017.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE YOUNG NEUROSCIENTISTS SYMPOSIUM

The Sociedad Chilena de Neurociencia (SCN) calls PhD students and postdocs to participate in the “Young Neuroscientists Symposium” of the Congress. Applicants to this very special symposium will be selected by contest, according to their merits.

Bases:

1) Those awarded the four available slots will receive full fellowships, which will cover registration, all transfers and stay at the Enjoy Hotel during the Congress.
2) The awardees must attend the entire congress.
3) One of the four fellowships will be awarded to an applicant with residence in any Latin American country besides Chile. The other three will be given to applicants with residence in Chile. Exceptionally and depending on the merits of the applicants, the SCN may decide to modify the proportion of slots assigned to residents in or out of Chile, within the total of four.
4) All the works to be presented must have been mostly carried out in the country of residence.
5) Only one applicant from the same laboratory or collaborative research group can be awarded.
6) The presentations must be in English.

Applicant should submit the following documentation:

1) An abstract describing his/her work (with a maximum of 250 words in the body text, in English). The text may be slightly modified before the abstract submission deadline of the Congress (to be announced).
2) A curriculum vitae including personal data such as: full name, nationality, date and place of birth, country of residence, affiliation, education, awards and honors, research experience, publications, meeting presentations and any other relevant information.
3) A certificate from the PhD program (PhD students) or a letter from the postdoctoral supervisor (Postdocs), certifying the applicant current status.
4) Letter of reference from the thesis advisor or postdoctoral supervisor including certification that the applicant is fully capable of giving his or hers presentation fluently in English.

El curso está destinado principalmente a estudiantes de postgrado en el campo de la neurociencia y disciplinas afines  uruguayos y latinoamericanos, así como formadores de formadores uruguayos.

TEMARIO.- La temática del Curso Latinoamericano “Brain and Mind Evolution “ abarca desde la definición del Sistema Nervioso, el origen de las células nerviosas y las simples redes neurales tempranas, a la evolución de las redes neurales para lograr el control del sensorio-motor que permite la coordinación de las estructuras corporales que sirven diferentes funciones. También se tratará la evolución de la corteza cerebral en los mamíferos, incluyendo las bases genéticas de la evolución de la corteza y el cerebro humano, así como la evolución del comportamiento humano. Asimismo, se tratará la aparición del sentido de sí mismo, la conciencia y la evolución de la mente, incluyendo la inteligencia artificial.

The Course is primarily intended for Postgraduate students in the field of Neuroscience and related disciplines from the Latin-America and Uruguay as well as teachers of teacher of the Uruguayan Administration of Public Education.

THEMES- The “Brain and Mind Evolution” Latin-American course will address from the definition of Nervous System, the origin of nerve cells and simple early neural nets, how these nets evolved to achieve sensory-motor control and coordination of body structures sub serving different functions. It is also devoted to the evolution of the cerebral cortex in mammals, including the genetic bases of cortical development and evolution and human brain as well as human behavior. It will also focus on the emergence of the sense of self- and other- ness, and the evolution of the mind and Artificia Intelligence.
